Ignacio Fleta 1957 No 94 – Spain

This unique Fleta marks the history of the classical guitar giant Ignacio Fleta. This guitar has been made the same year as André Segovia’s three Fletas. It has the same characteristics which will forever mark the beginning of Ignacio’s fame. Like all of Ignacio’s guitars from this period, they were played by great professionals and have withstood the ravages of time with varying degrees of success. This guitar, like 99% of the Fletas from this golden age, has undergone a few repairs carried out to the highest standards. The sound of this number 94 is breathtaking: powerful, dynamic, and round. It is an incredibly easy-to-play neck. Quite simply, a dream guitar.

This is the first Fleta that we are offering for sale –  these instruments are difficult to get. 1957 was an important year for Ignacio, marking the beginning of the golden age of the Fleta’s guitars: André Segovia received his Fleta in 1957.
The guitar is in fine condition and has undergone some repairs (top, sides and back) due to drastic changes in humidity and temperature. Because of their lightweight construction, almost all Fletas from this golden age have undergone repairs. The repairs were carried out according to the rules of the trade, without making the top heavier. On the contrary, the few additions of glue acted as micro-bars, stiffening and improving the guitar acoustically.
The top is spruce, and the back and sides are South American rosewood. The Fustero tuners are original. The neck is slender and extremely comfortable.
It’s hard to sum up the sound of this guitar in just a few words. What strikes you from the very first notes is its thick, round sound. This Fleta has a lot more power than most traditional guitars. The basses are deep. The voice separation is exceptional. Playability is perfect. 65 cm /51 mm.
A bit of history: a few dates to keep things simple and understand why Ignacio Fleta’s guitars are among the best in the world:
1897: Ignacio Fleta was born in a small village in Spain. When he was just 13, he went to Barcelona to work with his 2 brothers, who made strings instruments. Ignacio is a cellist and  spent his time making bowed string instruments and playing the cello. He takes lessons with Pablo Casals.
1927: At the age of 30, Ignacio sets up his own workshop, making violins and a few guitars (barely one a year), inspired by Simplicio and Torres.
1950: It wasn’t until he was 53 that Ignacio decided to devote himself to the guitar. In 1955 he met André Segovia and was captivated by the master. Together with his sons, he imagined guitars that could rival the musicality of the quartet’s instruments and suit the master Segovia.
1957: André Segovia acquires three guitars from Ignacio to replace his Hauser.
1961: John William receives his Fleta, which he will play for over 12 years.
Ignacio died in 1977; his sons and grandsons continued to build Fleta guitars, and it took 20 years to get a Fleta.
