Thomas Norwood Domingo Esteso 2011 – France

Thomas Norwood was an American luthier based in Paris. Thomas specialized in replicating the great guitars of the turn of the century, such as the Torres and Ramirez. Here is a copy of a Domingo Esteso (1882 – 1937) made from the plans of a Domingo Esteso from 1932. Thomas guitars benefit from exceptional craftsmanship and an incomparable selection of woods. This Thomas Norwood features a spruce top, South American rosewood back and sides, and Rodgers tuners. The sound is quick,  thick and warm. A rare opportunity!

I had the opportunity to meet Thomas Norwood in his workshop on rue de Charonne in Paris. He was an extraordinary luthier with a passion for vintage instruments. In addition to his guitar model, he was offering 3 replicas of the great masters: a Torres model from 1884, a Ramirez from 1917, and a Domingo Esteso from 1932. Compared to the previous 2, the Esteso replica was the most powerful.
Domingo Esteso (1882 – 1937) was trained by Manuel Ramirez, as were Modesto Borreguero, Santos Hernandez, and Enrique Garcia. In 1915 he set up his workshop on Calle Gravina 7 in Madrid.
This Esteso guitar from 2011 is surprisingly powerful and easily comparable to today’s traditional guitars. The character is resolutely traditional, with a thick bass and impressive warmth in the treble. The neck is C-shaped rather than U-shaped, making it easy to play.
The guitar is in a near-perfect condition. A real beauty!
