Daniel Friederich pre 1960 spruce – ex Jeanne Bidaud

A unique opportunity to acquire a Daniel Friederich made in 1958/59 for Jeanne Bidaud (1927-2017), painter and classical guitarist. This guitar has a label without the workshop address and was therefore made between 1955, when the Friederich workshop was founded, and 1960. It was only after 1960 that the Concert, Arpège, and Récital models appeared. This “Jeanne Bidaud” guitar is not a Récital or Arpège model, but rather the model of guitar that Daniel Friederich was making at that time. The guitar has been perfectly maintained. Closer in style to Robert Bouchet guitars, this guitar is astonishing in its power and beautiful sound.

This guitar from Daniel Friederich’s early years embodies the qualities of his later instruments: power and separation of voices. It has had only one owner, Jeanne Bidaud, painter and guitarist (1927-2017).

The guitar has been repaired on the top and on one side. It has been maintained in a very professional manner and the back and sides have been refinished with a very light varnish. The varnish on the top is original, as are the machine heads.

This guitar is not strictly speaking a concert model, nor is it a Recital or Arpège model, as these distinctions only appeared after 1960. The label on the guitar does not include the workshop address, so this guitar was made earlier.

Spruce table with a repair under the bridge, repaired to the highest standards.
The frets and nut have been replaced.
The tuners are original Fustero.
The guitar has been refinished to the highest standards with a very thin French polish.
The back and sides are Indian rosewood.
65 cm and 52 mm.

Without a doubt, classical guitars made by luthier Daniel Friederich are among the best classical guitars in the world. The legendary magic of Friederich’s sound is enhanced by the use of spruce, which adds complexity: beautiful dynamics with deep bass tones, incredible sound quality, and a perfect balance between low and high notes. We found the neck to be less bulky than on later Friederich models, which made it more comfortable to play.

About Daniel Friederich:

Daniel Friederich was born on January 16, 1932, in Paris, into a family of cabinetmakers, and grew up in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district of Paris, where the capital’s cabinetmaking workshops were located. It was there that he learned the art of guitar making. In 1948, he bought his first guitar and took lessons with Christian Aubin. At that time, Aubin, who was both a guitarist and a luthier, was putting the finishing touches on a guitar based on a model by Antonio de Torres. It was this instrument that inspired Friederich’s first guitar in 1955.
